Commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Dear CUNY SPS Community,

As we approach Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I’d like to offer a few words about the coming observance.

Each year, this day serves not only as a reminder of the profound impact this visionary civil rights leader had on our nation, but also as an opportunity to celebrate and recommit to the ideals that he championed.

For me, Dr. King’s unwavering dedication to social justice, equality, and unity resonates with the ethos that has defined CUNY SPS since its founding back in 2003. It is my hope that those same values will guide our work here in the years to come.

As we pause this weekend to honor his memory, I invite you all to learn more about his extraordinary life and vision with this wonderful reading list compiled by our Committee on Institutional Equity and Diversity (CIED):

Additionally, I was delighted to learn that Dr. King had a strong personal connection to the City University of New York in his lifetime. You can read more about his visits to different CUNY campuses on the CIED Resources page.

This weekend, I encourage you all to take some time to read and reflect upon Dr. King’s legacy. May this Martin Luther King Jr. Day be a source of inspiration in your own efforts to realize his dream of equality and justice for all.

Sincerely,

Dr. Lisa R. Braverman

Dean, CUNY School of Professional Studies
