The CUNY School of Professional Studies (CUNY SPS) is pleased to announce the launch of the CUNY/OMH Mental Health Scholarship Program for Underrepresented and/or Multilingual Students. This scholarship is now available for students in either the psychology BA or MA programs.

The scholarship fund is underwritten by the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) and was developed in partnership with CUNY to address the statewide shortage of mental health care workers while encouraging a more diverse pool of mental health practitioners. In addition to supporting psychology students from underserved populations, the scholarship program will also be available for bilingual psychology students.

Dr. Carla Marquez-Lewis, academic director for the Psychology Programs, shared her enthusiasm for this new scholarship. “We know from research that a diverse mental health workforce results in more successful patient care,” said Dr. Marquez-Lewis. “That is why I am thrilled that we can now offer our hard-working psychology students this scholarship opportunity. We live in a multi-cultural city and state, so we desperately need the cross-cultural voices and perspectives that CUNY SPS students bring to the table.”

To help students advance their education towards building rewarding careers while improving the mental health disparities and ensuring culturally relevant care, the CUNY/OMH Mental Health Scholarship will distribute CUNY SPS’ $40,000 endowment over the next four semesters. Successful applicants will receive $1,000 as a tuition assistance scholarship.

CUNY SPS students in the undergraduate or graduate psychology programs are encouraged to review the qualifications and apply for the scholarship (scroll down to the “Special Awards and Programs” section) before the December 29, 2023 deadline.
